Gentle Mens League organizations trains GBV victims in skills
Worried about the rate of unemployment among the youth and young graduates, a young undergraduate, Victor Kingsley, leads his team (Gentle Men's League - GML) to train over 150 girls and women who were once victims of sexual harassment or any form of GBV due to economic dependence, in skills.
At 21, Victor who is the Founder and Director of Alpha Dynasty Hair and Beauty Studio, whose mother company name is Alpha Dynasty Group, under which GML, a social impact organization comes. has etched his name in the annals of history as one of those Nigerians who complement government’s efforts towards reducing the rate of unemployment among youths.
According to him, the event was just one of the initiatives way of contributing to the society to improve lifes of its citizens in the little way they can. Victor has been lately involved in the fight against inequality and gender based violence, fusing it with solutions for promoting decent work and economic growth. he has by all means proven to be the SDGs guy.
A native of Emii, Owerri, Imo State, Victor and his team has trained young men and women in various skills. Some of the skills are fixing and braiding of hairs, makeup services and tying of African wrap (gele) for brides during traditional and white weddings. The centre also renders pedicure services, fixing of nails and lashes, among others.
In a chat with Southeast Report during the graduation ceremony of the 2016/2017 batch of trainees at the centre’s 101, Orlu Road, Akwakuma, Owerri, Imo State office penultimate week, Victor said: “Gentle Men's league was established to provide opportunities for the youth, not just to acquire skills that will enable them to be self-reliant and enable them to contribute to the nation’s economy, but also help them join the global movement for the protection of women's and the girl child right against Gender based violence.
“It is not right for individuals, especially the youth and young graduates to remain idle or chase white collar jobs that are non-existent. When somebody has acquired a skill, he or she will be able to fend for himself and members of his family and also avoid being abused.”
He said some of the organization’s ex-students/trainees have always been retained because it is one of our policies to ensure that those we train are given a leeway to practice what they have learnt during the training period.
He also said it was his little contribution to government’s call for wealth and job creation and empowerment of youths to become self-sufficient.
“Our initiative is geared towards furthering our obligation of empowering youths to live a value-added life by organising vocational training. Our training are intensive with dedicated and seasoned facilitators aimed at impacting knowledge to the participants.
“Youth empowerment is a process where young people are encouraged to take charge of their lives. They do this by addressing their situation and then take action in order to improve their access to resources and transform their consciousness through their beliefs, values, and attitudes.
“Youth empowerment aims at improving quality of life and it’s achieved through participation in youth empowerment programmes such as the type offered by our centre,” he said.
According to him, most of the people who underwent training with GML begin their own businesses after the completion of training; but in some cases the Company retains some of the trainees as a result of their competence and some other reasons.
Advising the youth and young graduates to start up something no matter how small, instead of being idle,Victor revealed that he began the business in a very humble beginning.
He added that is has been the dream of the Gentle Men's league to raise a system that tackles so many problems affecting the youths and the global community at large no matter what it will cost him.
